Brought up and educated in the UK [University of York, BA (Chemistry) 1970; DPhil. 1974]. Formative post-doc years at the Max-Planck-Institute für experimentelle Medizin (Dept. Fritz Cramer), Göttingen (1976-1979), before moving to Freiburg. Retired, 2014.
